Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) - Test Sketches
Hi all :) I hope everyone's entries are going well!! I think I've finally decided on my subject: Nipponia Nippon (The Crested Ibis). I love colors on this beautiful bird. Here are some test sketches I did, using Google Images for reference. I'm just trying to get a rough feel for the forms. I hope to start figuring out the composition of my final image soon.

Thumbnails
Some thumbnail sketches. I can't seem to find a composition I like... any suggestions?

Colour Test
Still haven't found a composition I like, but i decided to try a color test on one of my existing thumbnails. This is vaguely the atmosphere I want to capture, although I would like it to be a lot more moody.. I think what I'm missing is space.. All my thumbnails feel too cramped at the moment..

Hey, for what it's worth, I really love the middle bottom one of the thumbnails.. there's something quite strikingly proud about the bird and it's national flag symbol in the background. I like the repetition of the curved lines, through the neck and head all the way down to the wings and feathers, makes the whole piece feel connected! Would really stand out on a wall, with a controlled colour palette but that's probably the graphic designer in me speaking!

Another Composition Test
I think I'm going to stick with the composition on the left for now. I'm not sure if the cut off beak will bother me, but for now I'm okay with it ^w^. I'm also not sure if I'll crop the final image like number 2 but I thought I'd post it anyway. Critiques and suggestions welcomed :D
