My initial sketch was based on photos of American Mustangs fighting. It would take a lot of adjustment to get the proportions right for the more stout Przewalski's Horse.

I grew up in North Dakota and have a lot of horse-loving friends who gave me advice on fixing shapes and proportions. At this point they no longer looked like mustangs and I moved on to coloring.

The shape of the clouds was defined as a way to lead the eye to the rearing stallion. I started sketching in the herd at this point as well. The final poses changed a lot as I went on!

This blog post by James Gurney ( http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2011/04/cure-for-middle-value-mumbling.html ) made me realize I had to think about lights and darks with the low position of the sun. I added extreme contrast to the horses before moving on to final detailing.
