Carefree and the careful
Hello

Just want to begin to say that it's an honour to be invited into such a prestigious competition. I took like and hour and look at the participant list, and I was amazed that there where so many good and well known artist here. This is going to be something majestic,

Well back to the topic and to tell you what I choose to illustrate. And I choose my favourite of all times. Panthera pardus (The Leopard)

I've always loved the Felidae family - the big kitties as I called them when I was young. I remember the first time I saw this beautiful and majestic animal. It's the smallest of the big ones but it's a master of survival and a fantastic hunter, even eats insects. The first drawing I did was on Leopard, The Amurleopard - witch is critically endangered with only 40 left of them in the wild. Facts like that just want to make you cry

I am trying to express power and motherly love. The care, the love and the fight for survival. It's not for no reason why I call this image Carefree and the careful. The cub will express curiosity, a hope because it's no different from how human children. In there eyes the world is harmless. However the mother is always powerful and careful. Because even the hunter is hunted , hunted without purpose more than sports and making cloths. Bizarre

I hope you will see the message better when I show the color.

Carefree and the careful - color 1
Process:

Simple stuff, a dual brush with self made pattern and brushes. This is the part where I put in the lights and colours, I just want to make it fast just to take away the white and give it some depth

Of course it's going to be more orange and not so dusty, but this is the good start , because when you put bright and powerful colors on this the image will pop!

Carefree and the careful - color 2
Process:

What happened in this second colouring part is the beginning of detailing. The first part is crazy brushing and shadow testing. what I do here is I use the lasso tool and mark the things I liked in the brushing , and give them a harder and wet edge - it's part of my style. I've also done some colour correction, I put some more red and orange . Made the shape of the eyes and worked on the expression

The next steps will be frankly the same, I will brush, until I do something I like and then mark it, harden the edges and then smooth-en them out again. And this is how I do the whole Image,.- I might use some textures of fur just to give the detail more umfhh and then I will do some light effects and maybe some more colour correction, and the rest is detail, the more time you spend on it the better it will be.

What I am going to do next is to listen to some beautiful music that takes me to the mood I want this image to express and I will paint until my fingers bleed.

Once again I Thank you for any type of comments, I mean it's never to late to improve, Well yeah, of course the contest deadline, but you get my point.

Wow, this is really getting a powerful feeling to it. The body expression and look of the cat eyes is great. There is a tension and energy in her body shape, looks almost like a frozen frame from an animation film.
Looking great, I will be following it!

Carefree and the careful - color 2
Al right then- it is finally starting to look like something worth looking at.

I haven been spending my time listening to dramatic moviethemes. Trust me it works. And at this stage I am really satisfied with the mother. I am happy how here expression tells her thoughts. She would do anything for here cub. I both fear her and admire her.

I will however work some more on the cube and the light play around - and probably the background. It's very cold and a lot of snow so it would be nice to see some actual snow falling with some nice light strokes falling down through the clouds giving the the highlights some more intenseness!

Well anyway, back to my dramatic music and fluffy cub!

Thank you for any comment or critique .

I forgot to say. O flipped the composition. Much nicer from this side.

Awesome, I love the flipped composition. The cats are getting more impressive every time you update. Just one thought: it seems to me that the rocks at left are too symmetrical with the ones at right. Maybe changing one of the sides a little bit could make it more realistic?
